Medieval Dinner

Allan and I took Matthew out on a date to the Cochem Castle. Our base set up a tour and dinner and we thought that it would be fun to bring Matthew along for an authentic medieval dinner. I didn't take many pictures inside the castle, except for at the dinner, but there are still quite a lot of them!

This is a picture of the castle. It is really beautiful and backs up to the Mosel river. If any of you are wine drinkers, the next time you get a bottle of Riesling look at the label. It may be from the Mosel =) Have I ever mentioned that we live in the wine country? =)

Here is a picture from inside the courtyard as we are about to start our tour.

This is us out on the balcony at the top of the castle. You can't see much behind us, but it was gorgeous!

After the tour we sat down to have dinner in what used to be a chapel. Before they serve any food you must first wash your hands. Here comes the man with the buckets!

Matthew washing his hands in the bucket.

Our first course was bread with some kind of pig lard spread. It makes me sick just typing those words...yuck! Of course, my luck, I didn't hear what the man was saying about it and I spread it on like butter. I took a few bites and then somebody let me in on what I was eating. Needless to say, I then tried to hide the rest (there were no napkins to wrap it in).

Our dinner entertainment.

Next up was some soup broth. There were no spoons, but we got more bread to slosh it up with. It was actually pretty yummy!

Just Allan and I ;)

Next they come around with some sort of tobacco that you snort in order to clean your pallet. Yes, I tried it. It wasn't too bad and suprisingly went right up my nose when I breathed.

This is a picture of our "plate."

The turkey legs!

This is just a super cute picture of Matthew and his friend Jillian. They sat next to each other at dinner.

They are really cute and Matthew is such a hoot!! He picked a flower for her in our yard earlier that morning so that he could give it to her and dinner. Then, when it was time for him to get dressed I was trying to put on his nice brown jacket. He got really upset and told me that he didn't like and he didn't want to wear it. He said, "Mom, Jillian won't think it's cool." Where was that from??! So he put on a brown sweater instead and then when we got to the castle he gave Jillian her flower and said, "Do you like my jacket?" Yes. Yes she did. Victory for Matthew! So cute!!
